When it comes to progress, my go-to has always been to measure it day-by-day. Am I better today than I was yesterday? Did I eat healthier today than I did yesterday? Did I try harder today than I did yesterday? Did I have more patience today than I did yesterday?
The other day, while listening to The School of Greatness podcast, I realized I’ve been measuring progress wrong all along. While sometimes it is best to measure progress day-by-day, it’s also important to keep in mind you may receive inaccurate results if you’re only looking at the close-up picture.
For example: We all know someone (or maybe you are that person) who weighs themself every single day and has a panic attack when they’re two pounds heavier today than they were yesterday. Did you know that your weight fluctuates 2 pounds every day due to water weight? You could EASILY be two pounds heavier in one day. It’s not necessarily because you ate too much or didn’t workout, it could be because you drank a lot of water and your body is still holding it!
I am learning to measure progress week-to-week or month-to-month. Everyone has a bad day (or week). It’s incorrect to believe we have fallen behind when we have a setback every once in a while. Mistakes are proof that you are trying!
“Just because you fail once, doesn’t mean you’re gonna fail at everything. Keep trying, hold on, and always, always, always believe in yourself, because if you don’t, then who will, sweetie? So keep your head high, keep your chin up, and most importantly, keep smiling, because life’s a beautiful thing and there’s so much to smile about.”
