Empathy is our greatest tool for getting to know and learning to love one another.
What is empathy? It is the ability we have to share and understand the feelings of another. We often confuse that with sympathy which is the ability to feel sorrow for another’s misfortune.
In this world we live in, I believe empathy is ESSENTIAL. I see so many messages of hatred floating around on the TV, internet, and even through day-to-day conversations. I believe it is okay to disagree; I believe it is okay to have differing values. However, it is NOT okay to treat another individual like they are less-than. With empathy, instead of sending messages of hatred, we can agree to disagree.
I guarantee my values are not all the same as the values of every friend and family member have. I guarantee my values are not the same as the values of every neighbor and co-worker I have. I believe that even with differing values we can still learn to love one another. In fact, some of my very best friends and very favorite co-workers believe in and value completely different things. And that’s okay! Just because we think and believe differently does not mean that we cannot find common ground.
There are so many impressive individuals surrounding YOU that have incredible things to offer. Jace and I talk about this subject all the time and we honestly believe it to be true.
